Agnes M. (McAlister) Crooke

WESTBROOK – Agnes M. (McAlister) Crooke passed away on Feb. 9, 2021, at The Mooring at the Downs, in Scarborough, at the age of 86.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Chester McAlister and Helen (Libby) McAlister. Agnes attended Deering High School and Fisher Junior College in Boston. She raised four children, Susan, Deborah, William and Robert in Concord, Mass.

She then returned to Portland, Maine, in 1982 to care for her parents at the family farm while working at Curtis Thaxter Attorneys at Law. Agnes was young at heart and always ready and willing to go on an adventure and have a good cup of hot coffee. She spent many summers with her mother and cocker spaniel Honey at her camp in Raymond.

Agnes was an enthusiastic and committed member of the Westbrook Bowling League at West-Port Bowling Lanes for many years and she was a proud member of Prides Corner Church in Westbrook where she served as Collector while also actively participating in church functions including, Christmas fairs and bean suppers.

Agnes had a green thumb. She had the most beautiful flowers and vegetables growing in her garden and never missed the opportunity to talk about or share them. Agnes found joy in entertaining, knitting, cooking and a cup of coffee. Her Boston Cream Pie was always a crowd-pleaser at church functions.

If you knew Agnes, you called her “Ag” or “Aggie”. Ag is lovingly remembered for her wit, sense of humor, and her “never give up” demeanor. Up until three years ago, Aunt Ag was still splitting some of her own firewood.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents, Chester and Helen; three siblings, Barbara, Herbert, and Arthur; niece, Patty and great-nephew, Andrew.

Agnes is survived by her children as well as nieces; Robin McAlister Lawson (Tom), Kathy Herer (Paul), nephews; Dennis McAlister (Cathy), David McAlister (Liz), Gary McAlister (Susan), Bill McAlister (Judi), many loving cousins and neighbors, as well as longtime friends; Beth, Jean, and Blanche, and of course her church community.

On Saturday, February 20, at 11 a.m., there will be a prayer service at Prides Corner Church, 235 Prides St., Westbrook, Maine, 04092. The burial is planned for a later date.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the care and love Agnes was given while at the Mooring, as the staff there became part of her family. Many thanks go out to the caring nurses and staff at Compassus Hospice.
