Joan Ellen (Manter) Couture

SACO – Joan Ellen (Manter) Couture, passed on Feb. 21, 2021, at Southern Maine Healthcare, Biddeford, Maine.

She was born on May 4, 1937, in Lewiston, Maine. She grew up on a farm in Wayne, Maine, with her parents, Herman S. and Evelyn M. (Robbins) Manter, and she worked very hard to provide for their family.

She graduated from Winthrop High School in June 1955. She was quoted in her yearbook, “You have shown yourself to be helpful to both the teachers and your classmates.”

She married her best friend and love of her life, Wilfred A. Couture, on Aug. 1, 1959, in Waterville, Maine.

She was a very dedicated and professional insurance clerk for several different companies. She took many insurance courses. Some of her hobbies were reading, baking brownies, making apple pies, knitting and gardening! Her best friend was Carol L. Steele and together they went off with other girl friends for weekend getaways from their kids and husbands!

She loved being a wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother!

She was predeceased by her parents, Herman S. Manter and Evelyn M. Robbins Manter; her sister, Marjorie Lovejoy; her great-grandson, Austin Blake; her BFF, Carol L. Steele; and many more friends and animals.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth P. Abbott and Linwood Abbott and family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Wilfred A. Couture.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne N. Owen and son-in-law, Christopher G. Owen; her grandsons, William M. Gagnon and Andrew J. Gagnon and their wives, Kristen Gagnon and Liz Gagnon; great-grand-daughters, Charlotte and Amelia Gagnon.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie E. Gray and son-in-law, Walter Gray; her grandchildren, Nicholas Gray, Catherine Blake and her husband Allan Blake; and great-grandchildren, Rylan, Gavin, Nolan.

She is survived by her son, Michael A. Couture and daughter-in-law, Christine Couture; and grandsons, TJ and James Couture.

Services are private. Burial will be in the Spring at St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville.
