Lawrence Alden Secord Sr.

SCARBOROUGH – Lawrence Alden Secord Sr., 86, passed away at home on April 10, 2021.

Born in Portland on July 2, 1934, Larry was the son of Mary Edna (Wilson) and Edward Avard Secord. He was a 1952 Graduate of Deering High School and 1954 graduate of University of Southern Maine. After college, Larry served in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

The great grandson of a Canadian sea captain, Larry had a lifelong love of the sea and lived most of his life within sight of it.

In 1955, he married Mary Theresa Akins, a member of the Penobscot Nation of Indian Island, Maine, and the love of 50 years of his life. Together they raised five sons and a daughter in South Portland, living there for 30 years.

He then lived for nearly 30 years on the Nonesuch River in Scarborough where he became a commercial fisherman, lobstering until age 84. He began his career as a building contractor, then a successful millwork salesman, most recently with Riverside Millwork.

He owned a camp in Wentworth Location, N.H., for four decades and loved to hunt, fish and trap the pristine mountains, woods, lakes and streams at the headwaters of the Androscoggin River. Larry enjoyed fly fishing and built and sold custom fly rods for 25 years. His knowledge of the woods and waters was legendary. An astute student of nature, animal habitat and people, he was good at nearly everything he did.

Earlier in life he belonged to the Southern Maine Beagle Club. He raised and trained beagles and hunted rabbits. He taught his children and grandchildren to enjoy the outdoors, the natural world and to appreciate, not dominate its resources.

He will be remembered as a man who lived life (and died) on his own terms and with a passion for exploration. He lived, hunted and fished with the seasons and by the tides. An indomitable spirit, he always looked ahead to the next adventure on the sea, in the woods or on the stream. Larry had a lifelong twinkle in his eyes; especially for the ones he loved.

Larry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary in 2004 and his parents.

He leaves behind his brother, Steve and late wife Gail of South Portland; five sons, Larry Jr. and wife Pam of Naples, David of Bangor, Tom and wife Allyson of South Portland, Marty and wife Robin of Gorham, Daniel and wife Pam of South Portland; and his only daughter, Theresa and husband Bill of Farmington; grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren, Melissa, Marty Jr., Caleb, Will, Shannon, Bonnie, Emily, Aleta and Audrey, Jamie and Andrew, Garrett, Easton, Nokomis, Chris, Colissa, Chelsea, Solomon, and nieces and nephews Chad, Scott, Laurie and Becky.

He also predeceases a devoted and beloved later in life partner, Sara and their beagle, Penny.

Special thanks to neighbors Jerry and Kate who helped with the boat, the docks, lobster traps, snow removal, home cooked meals and in many other ways in recent years.

Private family graveside service and interment in Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.
