Arthur “Archie” E. Merrill Jr.

WESTBROOK – Arthur “Archie” E. Merrill Jr., 86, passed away April 13, 2021 at his home. He was born in Westerly, R.I. on July 23, 1934, a son of Arthur Merrill Sr. and Mary (Fitzmorris) Merrill.

The family returned to the safety of Maine at the start of World War II, and Archie attended local schools in Gorham. His peers thought of him as a great basketball and baseball player and a swell guy. As a young man, he enlisted in the Navy, serving for several years before being honorably discharged.

Archie spent his working years employed as a body shop manager for several local dealerships before retiring as the body shop manager at Wyman’s in Gorham. He was married to Barbara (Lyden) Merrill for over 50 years, and the two enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the Caribbean and Las Vegas.

In retirement, Archie enjoyed working part-time at the River Meadow Golf Club. He was an avid golfer and looked forward to golf outings with “the crew”. In his younger years, Archie raced car #32 at Beech Ridge where many memories were made. In most recent years, Archie has lovingly cared for his wife, Barbara.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Terri Brown; siblings William Merrill and Bernice Cleveland, and sisters-in-law Sandra Merrill and Anna Merrill.

Archie is survived by his wife, Barbara Merrill; children and stepchildren, Tracy Hall, Joyce Hebert and her husband Philip, Scott Agnew, and son-in-law Howie Brown; a brother, George Merrill; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren including his special grandson, Joshua Fogg.

His family is grateful for the excellent care given to Archie by Dr. Ellis Johnson and Dr. Jessica Bian; they and the home health team supported him not only medically but also with compassion and kindness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua, 268 Brown St., Westbrook. Interment will follow at St. Hyacinth Cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby Blais and Segee, 35 Church St., Westbrook. To express condolences or participate in Archie’s online tribute, please visit http://www.DolbyBlaisSegee.com.
