On Friday, April 16, 2021, Carl W. (Bill) Goodwin of Wells Branch, loving husband and father of seven, passed away at the age of 91 at the Huntington Common in Kennebunk.

Carl was born at the family farm in Wells Branch on Jan. 1, 1930, to parents Carl and Clara (Wightman) Goodwin. Carl attended the Division 16 one-room schoolhouse in Wells Branch, Wells High School, and the University of Maine in Orono, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

On March 26, 1953, Carl married Joan Mary Nadeau of Kennebunk. Carl and Joan moved to New Jersey and Carl worked as an engineer for the Worthington Corporation in Harrison.

Upon the death of his father, Carl and Joan moved back to the family farm in 1954. There, Carl took over and expanded the family lumber and wood business.

Carl was a member of the Wells Branch Fire Association and Wells Branch Community League for many years; he served as a member of the Wells Planning Board.

Carl and Joan started wintering in the St. Cloud, Florida, area in 1982, where he enjoyed playing tennis. He recently returned home full-time to the family farm, now housing the 11th generation of Goodwins. Carl enjoyed singing, homemade pies, chicken barbecues, western films, and telling stories that got more fantastic as the years went by.

Carl’s final days were spent at Huntington Common in Kennebunk. Carl’s family would like to thank the staff, especially Lisa and Ashley, for their kindness while he was in their care. Carl was predeceased by his parents and his son Alan died in 1957. Carl is survived by wife of 68 years, Joan, and six of their seven children and their spouses, Dwight Goodwin, Lynn and David Schmidt, Jeffrey and Leisa Goodwin, Julie and Larry Downing, Christopher Goodwin, and Caroline and Brian Lane. He has seven surviving grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Carl will be laid to rest in the family plot at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk.
