John “Jack” E. Whitmore

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – John “Jack” E. Whitmore died peacefully on April 21, 2021 at the Sand Gate Nursing Care Facility in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Jack was born in Portland, Maine on Oct. 28, 1931, the first child of Cecelia Deetjen Whitmore and William H. Whitmore, Sr. He was educated in local schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1949 where he was a standout member of the basketball team. Jack served with the US Air Force in Africa where he was a member of the Air Force basketball team. Following his service, he attended and graduated from the University of Maine where he also was a member of their basketball team.

The career of choice for Jack was education. He taught at the former Jack Junior High School for many years and was Athletic Director during his time there. Jack finished his career at Lincoln Middle School.

Jack was an avid golfer and a member of the Riverside Golf Course where he participated in several Portland City Employees Golf Tournaments and once won the William Bruce Dalton memorial trophy.

To say he was a wonderful husband, brother, uncle and human being would be to sell him short. People truly enjoyed being around Jack. He had a wonderful life and we will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Millet Whitmore, his brother William “Billy” Whitmore, sister-in-law Vonnie Whitmore and his second wife, Mary Ellen St. John.

Survivors include his brother, Richard “Dick” Whitmore and wife Theresa of Portland, sisters, Barbara (Whitmore) Jensen and husband Ronald of Boynton Beach, Fla, and Sandra (Whitmore) Pardi and husband Guido of Falmouth; and his stepdaughters, Nanci Tellam of Key Biscayne, Fla, Stacey Seis of Coral Gables, Fla., and Lisa Dority of Miami, Fla., and their husbands and children; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.

We would like to thank Jack’s stepdaughters for the wonderful care they gave to our brother, especially Nanci Tellam for her continuous support.

There will be no visiting hours and a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
