CAPE ELIZABETH – Alberta O’Connor Baker passed away on April 29, 2021 at her home in Cape Elizabeth at the age of 97. Born on April 11, 1924 to Georgie and Philip O’Connor, she grew up in Portland, graduating from Portland High School in 1942.
During WW II Alberta worked at the New England Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland as a welder, building Liberty Ships for the war effort. It was there that she met her future husband, George. Alberta later worked in various offices in the Portland area.
Alberta was an avid golfer, a charter member of the Gorham Country Club, and scored a “hole in one” in 1977. Tending her garden and enjoying the outdoors brought her immense joy. Alberta was also a faithful fan of the Boston Red Sox
Alberta was predeceased by her husband George Baker; parents; one sister and two brothers. She is survived by her daughter Judy Merrill of Tennessee, son George Baker of Virginia and Maine; sister Phyllis Norton of California, brother Robert O’Connor of Florida; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
