I have been reading about the fishing industry’s opposition to offshore wind.

From what I read, there’s no alternative plan to a great big, “no.” Nothing is being proposed to offer a model of local control, to counter “foreign energy companies” or to otherwise protect the ecosystem that is already being harmed by rapidly increasing ocean temperatures.

My biggest difficulty however, is with the attitude that because those in the fishing industry make their living from our common ocean waters, no one else should be allowed to.

Other states all along the east coast are moving forward with ocean wind. Rhode Island, with its miles and miles of vulnerable coastline has the US’ first offshore wind already. Maine seems to have a real opportunity to “do it right” here and I fervently wish that the creative and hard-working people in the fishing industry, who are taking such an uncompromising stance, would instead come up with viable options to make this work to benefit all of us and our common environment.
