Charles Richard Grover

YARMOUTH – Charles Richard Grover passed away on May 16, 2021. He had been dealing with a serious heart condition and other issues for a number of years prior to his passing. Charles was born in Portland on April 13, 1951. He spent his life in Maine, residing in Yarmouth, the town he loved.

Charles, affectionately known as Charlie, was a beloved figure in his community, having been to nearly every Yarmouth Clam Festival since its inception. Pretty much everywhere he traveled (including the Caribbean), someone would yell, “Hey, Charlie!”.

Charlie worked up until his final illness, as the parts manager at Handy Boat in Falmouth. He loved his job, especially the wonderful people he worked with — and their dogs, for whom he regularly brought treats.

Charlie loved the water, with his first love being the ocean. He was an avid boater, and he’d spend hours swimming or snorkeling. In fact, his Florida friends called him a merman.

He was a huge fan of classic rock and could often be found on a Friday night at the end of a work week, rocking out to his tunes. He was an aficionado of stereo quality and particularly loved to crank up the music on high-end speakers. He was also man enough to admit that he loved Cher and Abba.

Charlie loved to dance. He didn’t care who was watching. He’d go right out onto a dance floor and enjoy himself – whether with a partner or not. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, and golf.

A heart-filled man, Charlie was occasionally asked by young children, “Are you Santa Claus?,” to which he would answer, “No. But I know him.”

He was very easy-going but also highly astute and a fine judge of character. He was a steadfast friend and support to his many, many friends and family members. You always knew where Charlie stood.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane Faxon Grover, the love of his life; and his sister, Lenore “Nora” Grover Miley, her three sons, his cousins, and extended family. He was also a favorite of his wife’s family, including his father-in-law; his brothers and sisters-in-law; and his six nieces and nephews; all residing in New Hampshire.

Charlie’s physical absence will be sorely missed, but his huge heart and spirit will be with us forever.

A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be planned later this summer.
