Loon Echo Land Trust hosts Tree Farm tour
Loon Echo Land Trust kicks off summer with Sebago Stewardship Hub for Tree Farmers Tour of Crooked River Forest from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22 (rain date June 5).
Tree farmers and landowners are invited to tour the forest, which was recently designated a Tree Farm. Supported by the American Tree Farm System, the Maine Tree Farm Committee aims to help keep tree farmers in the local watershed connected to each other. Loon Echo is partnering with the Portland Water District, Western Foothills Land Trust and the Lakes Environmental Association. The tour is free.

Loon Echo board member Quincy Van Winkle will be leading a moderate-level hike up Pismire Mountain at Raymond Community Forest from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 26. Hikers should bring headlamps and water and wear appropriate footwear. The hike is free but registration is required at loonecholandtrust.org/events.
Celebrate National Trails Day by helping LELT cut a new section of trail at Peabody-Fitch Woods, Narramissic Farm in South Bridgton, from 9 a.m. to noon June 5. Tools will be provided; registration is required at the link above.
Rufus Porter Museum opening soon
The Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity, located at 121 Main St. (across from the library), will be opening for the summer season on June 12.
The museum is dedicated to the life and works of Rufus Porter, known today mainly for his folk paintings around New England, including some in Bridgton. However, he was also a musician, inventor and the founder of the Scientific American magazine, which is still published today. To learn more call 647-2828 or go to rufusportermuseum.org.
Lake association workshop
Lakes Environmental Association is hosting an Erosion and Sedimentation Control Practices workshop at the Maine Lake Science Center, 51 Willett Road, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3.
This course, taught by Maine Department of Environmental Protection, is necessary to become a DEP contractor certified in erosion and sedimentation control practices. It is of primary interest to contractors but could be helpful to code enforcement officers, consultants, engineers and public works employees.
