Scouts help local legionnaires

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts joined forces with American Legion Posts 62 and 197 to install U.S. flags on veterans’ graves in Woodlawn and St. Hyacinth’s cemeteries in preparation for Memorial Day.

The Girl Scouts included Troop 574 and leaders Susan Austin and Amie Boucher along with parent volunteer Christina Fernald. Abigail Ruby of Windham also helped.

Memorial Day

Westbrook is sponsoring a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 31, at Riverbank Park on Main Street.

Phil Spiller Jr. of Post 62 will be the emcee and speakers will include American Legion post commanders Roger Barr of Post 62 and Steve Girard of Post 197. Mayor Michael Foley will read a proclamation and Junie Dugas will sing the national anthem and “God Bless America.” Dennis Marrotte, Post 62 1st vice commander, will read the poem “In Flanders Fields.”

Westbrook High School Band members will perform “Taps” with Dylan Bernard and Ashton Kinney on trumpets and Jaylen White playing drums. The Westbrook Police Department will fire a volley.

Post 62 Chaplain Phil Leclerc will deliver the opening prayer and benediction.

There will not be a Memorial Day parade in Westbrook this year.

The American Legion will have an observance at 8 a.m. at Veterans Rest in Woodlawn Cemetery on Stroudwater Street preceding a ceremony at the gravesite of Stephen W. Manchester, namesake of Post 62.

Manchester was the first soldier from Westbrook to lose his life in World War I.

Food pantry date changes

The Westbrook Food Pantry in the community center at 426 Bridge St. will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1 and 15 because of election day on June 8. In July, the hours will return to the second and fourth Tuesdays. The pantry remains accessible only through curbside service.

Book sale reminder

Friends of Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., is holding its annual book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, outside the library. Every child will receive a free book.

Kismet Miss-P-Boo, owned by Maxine Hopkinson of Westbrook, was judged best purebred long-haired cat in the annual cat show at Woodford’s Congregational Church in Portland, the American Journal reported on May 26, 1971.
