Alice Irene (Bernier) Lander

PORTLAND – On Dec. 2, 2021Alice Irene (Bernier) Lander, passed away at the age of 98 years. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep.She will be lovingly remembered by son Charles E. Lander, III and his wife Marianne of Tenio, Washington, John A. Lander of Portland and his wife Janice, daughter Ellen M. Williams and her husband Allan of Glenburn, Maine, daughter Nancy J. Melillo and her husband Robert S. Melillo of Colchester, Vermont, and daughter Martha L. Kitchen and husband Stephen C. Kitchen of Mercer, Maine, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grand children She will be dearly missed by her many friends, including her Thursday Mah jongg group. She immensely enjoyed her many rounds of bridge with her Wednesday Bridge group. She was active in her local church at Saint Patrick’s of Portland and Sacred Heart Church of Waterville, Maine before she moved to Portland. The family greatly appreciated the wonderful support and kindness shared by Paulette Barselou her dear friend and neighbor. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years Charles E. Lander, Junior and her daughter Sarah A. Delong and husband Christopher Delong of Ellsworth, Maine. She was the last surviving sibling of eight brothers and a sister, of the Archilalaus and Felixine (Bolduc) Bernier family from Waterville, Maine. She was involved in many volunteer endeavors at: Sacred Heart Church Waterville Women’s groups, St. Patrick’s, RICA, Eucharist Minister, Alter Flowers, Baron Center Catholic services volunteer. Our mother left us this beautiful message: “To my children who all have a special place in my heart. I am very proud of all of you and your spouses. You have filled my greatest dream, that of being a mother.”Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m., on Wednesday, December 8, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home at 660 Brighton, Avenue, Portland. Mask will be required while in the funeral home. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, December 9, at St. Pius X Church at 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland, Burial will follow in Brooklawn Memorial Park 2002 Congress St. in Portland. The family wishes to send a special thank- you to the staff at Hospice of Southern Maine for their help, care and compassion provided during Mom’s end of life care.Expressions of sympathy can be made in the form of a donation in Alice’s name and can be mailed to Hospice of Southern Maine,390 US Route One,Scarborough, Maine 04074
