Renald Charles Breton

BIDDEFORD – Renald Charles Breton, 74, of Wells, formerly Biddeford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 after recovering from complications and surgery as a 12 year pancreatic cancer survivor.

Son of the late Harvey and Annette (Cloutier) Breton, Renald is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Claire Breton; daughters Lisa Breton of Newburyport, Mass., Cheryl Breton Flowers of Lake Worth, Fla. and her spouse Jesse Flowers; as well as grandsons Tyler Flowers, Clarence Clyatt IV, and granddaughters Madison Flowers, MacKenzie and Regan Clyatt.

Affectionately called “Reny ” by those who knew him best, Renald grew up in Biddeford and graduated from St. Louis High School, where he participated in many activities and acquired lifelong friends who remained close until his passing. Renald received his degree from Boston University, after which he joined the teaching staff at York High School and during his 30 years, Renald was actively involved in coaching golf and football; retiring in 1999 as English department head. Renald also served for many years as a volunteer fireman for the Wells Branch Fire Department.

After retirement, Renald found time to pursue his passion for travel, enjoying many trips with his wife and family. Over the past decade, they enjoyed being snowbirds and escaping the harsh winters to their condo in Florida, but Renald always counted the days until he could return to Maine, to his home in Wells and enjoyed regular walks on Kennebunk Beach. His true “happy place” was his Sebago Lake house, where he spent his days boating, fishing and reading. Spirituality was always a central part of Renald’s life; he found great fulfillment in attending weekly services and even during Covid, found online services to attend.

Renald will forever be remembered for his lifelong passion for football; first as high school coach, and then as both a fan and follower of Notre Dame and the Patriots. Renald never missed a game and would often plan his weekends around the football schedule.

Family and friends will gather for visitation at Hope Memorial Chapel in Biddeford on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022 from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
