Steven Earl Kunz

CAPE ELIZABETH – Steven Earl Kunz passed away peacefully on Feb. 18, 2022, at the age of 78 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine.Steven, born on Dec. 22, 1943, in Lewiston, Maine, was of Québécois descent. His mother was Pauline Kunz (née Cote) a homemaker and radio singer. His father was Carl Kunz, a Mariner in the Merchant Marines during World War II.Steven excelled as a student and his gift for mathematics and physics was noted by his teachers, which eventually enabled him to attend North Yarmouth Academy on a full scholarship after high school. He then attended The University of Maine where he served as President of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and graduated with honors.In his last year at UMaine, Steven met dynamic, beautiful and athletic Karen Olson while they both practiced shot put on the athletic field. Following their marriage in 1969, Steven and Karen embarked on an adventure to Germany where they lived for eight years while he worked as an engineer for the United States Army.Steven was adventurous and had an insatiable curiosity about the world. While in Europe, he enthusiastically brought his family skiing in Italy and hiking in the beautiful Swiss Alps. He achieved complete fluency in the German language, and later founded “German Technical Translations,” a company that translated complex technical documents from German to English.In 1978, Steven and Karen moved back to the United States, to Medway, Massachusetts. Steven spent the bulk of his career working as an engineer for the U.S. Army at Natick Labs in Natick, Massachusetts. There he pioneered work with parachute deployment which ensured efficient delivery of important equipment and supplies to troops stationed in remote locations.While in Medway, Steven planted a thriving vegetable garden and took his family on road trips throughout New England. Steven also enjoyed spending time exploring physics, researching and writing extensively about theories surrounding the formation and structure of the Universe; conducting experiments and filling hundreds of notebooks with complex mathematical formulas and diagrams.After retiring from engineering, Steven taught high school physics, acted as a technical consultant for software companies and volunteered his time with “Runs with Wolves Sanctuary” in Limington, Maine.Steven is survived by his three daughters, Karlina Mottern (son-in-law James Mottern; grand-daughters; Lillian, Carolyn, and Jacqueline); Tanja Kunz and Kaye Kunz; and his son Kai Kunz (daughter-in-law Mallory Kunz).
