Yarmouth student completes D.C. internship

William Chinnock, a Yarmouth native, has completed a summer internship at the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.

Chinnock is the son of Bill and Terry Chinnock and served as an intern in Collins’ Lewiston Constituent Services Center last spring.

Chinnock is attending law school at Quinnipiac University this fall and intends to study public interest law. Upon graduation, he plans to pursue a career in criminal prosecution.

“William has a strong work ethic and a commendable desire for public service,” Collins said. “I was delighted to have him in my office.”

To express her appreciation for their public service, Collins hosted Chinnock and his fellow summer interns for breakfast in the Senate Dining Room.

Avesta scholarship winners announced

Avesta Housing announced the recipients of this year’s $1,000 scholarships, awarded annually to residents who are enrolling in a secondary education program.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Avesta Housing. To mark the occasion, Avesta has expanded the number of scholarship recipients from two to three for the first time.

Meredith Bolduc of South Portland is a single mother of a special needs child who is enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University.

“My biggest educational goal is to graduate from college so I can have a career that will support my family, help others, be personally satisfying and allow for a balanced lifestyle,” she said.

Oumalkaire Omar of Portland is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in finance at Howard University. She intends to obtain her master’s degree and help others improve their financial literacy.

Johan Sifa, also of Portland, is in her second year as an international business major at Champlain College. Her career goal is to partner with nonprofits around the world to help provide educational opportunities to children.
