Robert L. Sherwood Sr.

GORHAM – Robert L. Sherwood Sr., 74, of Gorham, passed away on Aug. 15, 2022.

Bob was born on Oct. 19, 1947, to the late Priscilla Hamaker Sherwood and Ward Sherwood in Portland.

He was educated in the Portland School system and after graduating in 1966, joined the United States Naval Reserve and upon graduation was assigned to the U.S. Navy Reserve in Portland for two years.

Bob was employed by Mercy Hospital in Portland for 44 years and worked in various capacities during his time there.

He was a devoted parishioner at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Portland. Bob held a number of roles there: Altar Guild leader and member, acolyte trainer, chalice bearer, vestry member and currently served as Senior Warden.

Firefighting was a big part of Bob’s life. He was a member of the Gorham Fire Department E2 Company from March 1976 to November 1987 and was active with the Gorham Fire Police from December 1999 to present. He was a member of the International Fire Buff Association (IFBA) and various fire buffing groups. Bob held various positions while a member of the Box 61 Fire Buff group in Portland. He was a regional vice president of the IFBA for five years.

Bob delighted in attending the IFBA conventions where he had many friends from the United States and Canada and always looked forward to reconnecting and the camaraderie.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, sisters Beth and Andrea and his first wife Sharon.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Cindy; brother Stewart and his wife April; son Robert, stepson Adam and his wife Amber, step daughter Emily and her husband Brandon; grandchildren, Brandon, Eva, Elizabeth Rose and Oliver; nieces Jessie (husband Larry, children Kai and Kiki), Regina (husband Marshall and their children); nephews Blake (wife Camrin), Josiah, Adam (wife Amanda and their children); former sister-in-law Carole (and her children Rob and Lisa) and many cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 678 Washington Ave., Portland, at 10 a.m.
