Judy Ann Tounge

FALMOUTH – Judy Ann Tounge, 77, died on July 16, 2022, at Northern Light Mercy Hospital.

Judy was born on May 29, 1945, in Boston, Mass. to Henry and Ruth Smith. She moved to Maine as a child, growing up in the family home in Falmouth.

After graduating from the University of Southern Maine, Judy worked as an elementary school teacher, educating and inspiring 2nd and 3rd graders until she retired.

Fiercely devoted to her family, Judy was the ultimate caregiver, supporting her parents as they aged, advocating for her son, Scott, encouraging her son, Brett, as he pursued a career in drug development, and loving her husband, Timothy Pennell, and her granddaughter, Niamh Stull, unconditionally.

Charming and gregarious, Judy loved to entertain. In particular, her Christmas parties were legendary. But she welcomed everyone—even friends of friends and groups of teenage girls—any day, any time, offering enough food to feed an army and, of course, wine. She even fed a menagerie of wildlife that included at one time, a duck, a skunk, and an opossum.

She also enjoyed celebrating birthdays, sending friends and family members cards she had created on her iPad (she was very artistic), often featuring Tim or one of her cats dressed as Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. Self-described—very appropriately—as “feisty,” Judy was a force of nature; she will be missed beyond words.

Judy was predeceased by her son, Scott Tounge.

She is survived by her husband, Timothy Pennell of Falmouth; son, Brett Tounge; and granddaughter, Niamh Stull of Philadelphia, Pa.; and sister, Nancy Mason of Niantic, Conn.

A memorial service celebrating Judy’s life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. at Burr Cemetery in Freeport.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. To view Judy’s memorial page or share an online condolence, please visit http://www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
