Classes will be in session from 6-8:30 p.m. each week.

The purpose of the academy is to introduce people to the Maine Criminal Justice System and give them a working knowledge of the Gorham Police Department and its officers. The program will include victimization awareness and hands-on demonstrations. Two classes with the Gorham Fire Department will be incorporated into the curriculum.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to extensively learn from, interact with, and ask questions of the experienced professionals of the Gorham police and fire departments,” a prepared release stated.

The program is free, but enrollment is limited. Applicants must be at least 18, reside in Cumberland County, have no felony or misdemeanor arrests in past five years and must agree to a background check.

To apply, see the Community Programs tab at the Police Department’s website at gorham-me.org/police-department. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the Gorham Police Station at 270 Main St. or emailed to Sgt. Ted Hatch at thatch@gorham.me.us.
