School Committee member Jessica Foley and Mayor Michael Foley have enrolled their son in a private school, the mayor confirmed this week.

“We have chosen to send our child to a religious school that best supports the faith in which we have chosen to raise our child,” the Foleys said in a written statement to the American Journal. “We support school choice for every family in Westbrook whether it be public, private or homeschool, and this choice does not affect our ability to serve the community we love and care deeply about. We thank everyone for respecting our privacy regarding this personal family decision.”

The couple supports Westbrooks schools and made the decision based on their “family values,” the mayor said in a phone call.

Jessica Foley was elected to the Ward 2 School Committee seat in 2021. She said in her campaign literature then that as the mother of a kindergartner “entering Westbrook Schools this fall I felt led to become more involved and serve in the community.”

The mayor said other elected Westbrook officials also have children enrolled in private schools, but he declined to name them.

Seniors club to meet;
seeks new members

Westbrook Seniors Citizens will meet at 12:30 p.m.  Monday, March 8, at the Westbrook Community Center.

Carol Sue Hayden, vice president of the club, said it is “eager to welcome” new members ages 50 and up for “fun, fellowship and mutual support.”

The seniors meet twice monthly on the first and third Mondays between September and May. “Lively entertainment” and snacks are provided on the first monthly meeting, Hayden said, and a full meal is served by reservation at the second meeting of the month.

The club is now working with the community center to arrange assorted day trips. In a community outreach, the club offers two, $500 scholarships to deserving students graduating from Westbrook High School.

Marrotte to speak
on photography

Dennis Marrotte, a member of the Portland Camera Club, will be the guest speaker at Westbrook Historical Society meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the Westbrook Community Center.

Marrotte will speak about his photography. He also is the commander of American Legion Post 62.

The American Journal reported on March 7, 1973, that Bernadette Lavigne of Bridgton Road and Annie Beesley of Portland left for an 18-day trip to Florida where they were to visit several cities, Disney World and the Everglades.
