Yarmouth High School senior wins Principal’s Award

Joshua Leinwand, a senior at Yarmouth High School, is the recipient of a 2023 Principal’s Award from the Maine Principals’ Association, given in recognition of high school seniors’ academic achievement and citizenship. He will also receive a $1,000 scholarship and attend an honors luncheon with other recipients Saturday, April 1.

CBHS Spanish teacher named Language Teacher of the Year

Annemarie Orth, a Spanish teacher at Casco Bay High School and a world language specialist for the Portland Public Schools, received the Teacher of the Year award at the Educators for a Multilingual Maine conference March 18 at the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus.

“Profesora Orth is … an excellent role model,” said Carlos Gomez, the district’s director of language development. “Students leave her classroom more open and more curious about language and cultures because she has made language come alive for them.”

Orth joined Portland Public Schools in 2004, and has also taught classes on teaching and student engagement and presents at world language conferences nationally.  She is a member of the Maine Department of Education’s World Language Council and coordinates Seal of Biliteracy testing in the district.

Deadline April 1 for Pierce scholarships

The Maine Educational Services Foundation is accepting online applications for the 2023 Richard H. Pierce Memorial Scholarship until Saturday, April 1. Ten $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to Maine residents entering their first year of post-secondary education and can be renewed for up to four years. Technical career program scholarships available

High school seniors who attended a technical career program as part of their high school curriculum and plan to attend college or a technical school are eligible to apply for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust’s Career and Technical Education Scholarship. Students must be residents in counties with a Bar Harbor branch, which includes Cumberland County, and the deadline to apply is May 1. Learn more at barharbor.bank/scholarships.
