Windham student accepted to Naval Academy
Maine First District Rep. Chellie Pingree nominated Windham High School Senior Roman Thomas Jr. to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and he has been accepted. “Acceptance to a United States service academy is extremely competitive and reflects highly on a student’s scholarship, community service and character,” Pingree said in a press release. “Roman has demonstrated an incredible commitment to serving the country and a maturity beyond his years.”
“I have always wanted to serve in the U.S. armed forces,” Roman wrote in his letter requesting a nomination. “I have an obligation to give the nation a part of myself for how much it has offered me and my family.”

New library hours
The Windham Public Library has new hours. They are now open Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed on Saturdays from June through August. The library team will, however, be at the Windham Farmers’ Market on Turning Leaf Drive from 9 to 11 a.m. on the following Saturdays: June 10 and 24, July 6 and 22 and August 12 and 26. Visit their booth to get a new library card, pick up any holds you may have reserved, drop off returns or check out something from the assortment of new materials they will have on display.
Junk in the Trunk
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 148 is looking for sellers at their upcoming Junk in the Trunk event June 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. Load up your vehicle with anything you want to sell, such as crafts, clothing and tools. Small display tables and canopies are OK for displaying your wares. No food or drink sales are allowed. The cost is $25 per stall. Stalls are limited and must be booked in advance. Contact teachinjeff@yahoo.com if you have questions or would like to participate.
Crafters wanted
The Windham Historical Society will host a Fall Harvest Festival Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will be a day of old-fashioned fun featuring games, food, music and a craft fair on the Village Green off Windham Center Road. The society is seeking crafters who might want to participate. The cost for a space is $25. You would have to provide your own table and display.
