The fall sports season keeps steaming along with local squads emerging victorious more often than not.
It may seem hard to believe, but some teams are already nearing the midway point of the regular season and the action is just heating up.
Here’s a look back at the week that was and a glimpse at what’s to come.
Football
South Portland’s football team improved to 3-0 for the first time in 23 years after downing host Oxford Hills, 42-7, last Friday. The Red Riots held a 7-0 lead after one quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run from Alex Horton. After the Vikings tied it, a 4-yard TD run from quarterback Easton Healy with just 17.6 seconds to go in the second period made it 14-7 South Portland at the half. Healy then scored on a 17-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before the Red Riots broke it open in the fourth, as Connor Gerard scored on TD runs of 3-yards and 1-yard, then Christopher Salamone put it away with a 47-yard touchdown scamper.
The Red Riots return home Friday to take on 0-3 Windham. The teams didn’t play last season. South Portland hasn’t started a season 4-0 since 2001.
Cape Elizabeth fell to 1-2 after a 34-8 loss at undefeated Fryeburg Academy. The Capers’ lone points came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Brady Inman hit Aidan Connolly with a 36-yard scoring pass.
Cape Elizabeth plays host to 1-2 Freeport Saturday afternoon. Last year, the Capers won at the Falcons, 6-3.
Boys’ soccer
Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw at rival Yarmouth last week, then improved to 5-1-1 at the midway point by beating visiting Poland (4-1) and downing host Fryeburg Academy (4-2). Harry Converse had the tying tally against the Clippers. In the win over the Knights, Tully Haydar had two goals while Converse and Luis Gonzalez added one apiece. Against the Raiders, Converse, Haydar, Will Vaine and Jack Wark all scored once.
The Capers welcomed York Thursday and go to Gray-New Gloucester Tuesday of next week.
South Portland took a 2-3 mark into Wednesday’s home showdown versus Falmouth (see our website for game story). Last week, the Red Riots lost at Biddeford (1-0), then downed visiting Bonny Eagle (5-2). In the victory, Gedeao Buanza scored three goals, while Oliver Linscott and Christiano Jundo added one apiece. Goalkeeper Michael Zaccaria made four saves.
The Red Riots go to Gorham Saturday, then visit Cheverus Wednesday of next week.
Girls’ soccer
Cape Elizabeth’s girls’ soccer team continued to stake its claim as the team to beat in Class B South following recent wins over visiting Yarmouth (2-0), host Poland (4-0) and visiting Fryeburg Academy (5-1) to improve to 6-0-1. Against the two-time reigning Class B champion Clippers, in a rematch of last year’s regional final, the Capers got a measure of revenge, thanks to an early goal from Hailey Gorman and a second half free kick strike from freshman Haisel McGeachey, her first varsity goal.
“I think last year impacted how we played,” Gorman said. “We wanted to come back and show (Yarmouth) what we’re capable of. We really showed them what we have and I’m really proud of the team.”
“This was awesome,” McGeachey said. “So much fun.”
“I couldn’t be happier for these guys,” added Cape Elizabeth coach Branden Noltkamper. “They work hard every day. Yarmouth’s well-coached, they’re organized, they’re a good team. It’s never easy playing them, so I’m very happy with the result.”
In the win over the Knights, Gorman had two more goals, while Addie Miller and Alyssa Morisette added one apiece. Against the Raiders, Miller had three goals, while Gorman and Phoebe Evans added one apiece.
The Capers were at York Thursday and return home next Tuesday to take on Gray-New Gloucester.
“We just need to keep training and keep a positive mindset,” Gorman said. “If we trust each other, we’ll get progressively better.”
“Nothing is decided in September,” said Noltkamper. “We want to peak at the right time. We’re in a good place, but we have to get better every day. We just need to stay focused. We get Greely again, Yarmouth again. There isn’t a single game in this conference that’s easy to get through. We’re working through bumps and bruises and we’ll stay ready.”
South Portland was 1-3-1 after a 3-0 loss at Windham and a 2-2 tie at Kennebunk. Goalkeeper Amelia Burton-Fowler made 13 saves against the Eagles. Charlotte Savage and Emma Travis each scored a goal in the draw.
The Red Riots were at Falmouth Thursday, host Massabesic Saturday, go to Deering Tuesday of next week, then welcome Bonny Eagle next Thursday.
Field hockey
The South Portland/Westbrook co-op field hockey team was 2-2-1 heading into Thursday’s home game versus Bonny Eagle following a 4-2 home win over Marshwood and a 1-1 tie at Thornton Academy. In the victory, Jane Phillips scored twice and Lily Dorrington and Maeve Tardif added a goal apiece.
South Portland/Westbrook travels to Sanford Monday, then visits Scarborough Wednesday of next week.
Cape Elizabeth fell to 0-5 after recent losses at York (5-0) and Lake Region (4-1). Nell Hebda scored against the Lakers.
The Capers tried again for their first win Thursday at Leavitt. They go to Greely Monday and visit Poland Tuesday of next week.
Volleyball
Cape Elizabeth’s volleyball team won its first three matches, then lost to visiting York in four games (25-15, 20-25, 19-25, 15-25) and host Yarmouth, the five-time reigning Class B state champion, in a five set thriller (17-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 8-16), before improving to 4-2 with a straight set (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) win over visiting Falmouth.
The Capers are at Lake Region Friday. After going to Gray-New Gloucester next Tuesday, they’re at Wells next Thursday.
South Portland fell to 2-4 following a four set home loss to Thornton Academy and a three game (16-25, 15-25, 24-26) setback at Windham.
The Red Riots were at Brunswick Thursday, go to Marshwood next Tuesday, then return home Thursday of next week to face Deering.
Cross country
Cape Elizabeth’s cross country teams took part in a six-team meet at Yarmouth last week. The Capers girls were fourth and the boys came in fifth. Individually, Liam Nudd paced the boys with a sixth-place showing (18 minutes, 20.56 seconds). The girls were led by Hannah Frothingham (eighth, 21:37.12).
South Portland hosted Biddeford, Massabesic and Windham. The boys were first as a team and Fischer Petrlink was first individually in 17:09. The girls also came in first and had the top finisher in Julia Tompkins (19:59).
Golf
In its most recent outing, Cape Elizabeth’s golf team was beaten by Fryeburg Academy, 142-161. The Capers were led by Josie Sparks, who had a nine-hole round of 38.
