Soon for Portland there will be a new land use code. That code will govern how building occurs in the city, including what type of uses are permitted and where, standards for those uses, such as lot coverage, height and setbacks, density and parking requirements.
The last major overhaul of the code occurred more than 50 years ago. The rewrite is guided by the city’s recently updated comprehensive plan. Among the goals of that plan are creating opportunities for more housing for all, developing connectivity of neighborhoods and maintaining the city’s essential character-defining traits. It’s a balancing act at times to be sure.
After many workshops, the planning board very soon will be holding a public hearing and vote on a recommendation to the council. Ultimately the council decides what changes to adopt. The city has, over the last two years consistently, posted the proposed changes and all comments are posted online as well as the comprehensive plan. Many interested organizations have weighed in as well as numerous others. With the process nearing the end, now is the time to review and provide feedback on the proposed changes and whether they are a meaningful step forward to meeting the comprehensive plan’s goals.
