The spectacular performance of the smash hit “Mamma Mia!” by the Deering Players on Dec. 12 and 13 at the Deering High School Theater was not just fun and entertaining; it was a total repudiation of the current administration’s efforts  to squelch diversity, equity and inclusion.  Kudos to the directors of this epic musical for casting students in atypical roles — accentuating how “different is good” and affirming all students’ potential to contribute.

I was thrilled to be part of the audience that witnessed this amazing performance. The words of the ancient prophet Isaiah, “and a child shall lead them,” resonate with the reminder that we all could learn a lot by listening to our young people. “Kids lead with the heart,” as Lisa Liberatore wrote in a Dec. 11 op-ed in the Portland Press Herald. Certainly the students performing in “Mamma Mia!” led with their hearts. They are all winners in my book!  My thanks to them!
