The former owners of Portland’s Ohno Cafe announced on social media Sunday their plan to launch a pub in South Portland this spring.

Co-owner Lori Eschholz said she and her husband, Chris Beth, aim to open The Dooryard Pub before Memorial Day at 45 Huntress Ave. The space had been home to Modestman Brewing, and before that, the former Fore River Brewing Company.

The 2,000-square-foot building has about 40 indoor seats and 60 seats outside. Eschholz said they plan to offer live music. “That space has a good tradition of live music,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of bands reaching out to us who are interested in playing there again.”

They may also put the venue’s brewing equipment to use in the future, and offer a couple of house beers “in year two or three,” Eschholz said.

The menu won’t offer the same food as Ohno. The kitchen, which isn’t equipped with an exhaust hood, will offer items like nachos and panini.

“After many years running the Ohno Cafe, which was more labor-intensive cooking, we’re trying to keep this thing simple,” Eschholz said. “My husband likes to think of it as a place where you go to have a drink and hear some music and you may have something to eat, not a place where you go to eat and then you happen to have a drink.”

The bar will offer a variety of craft beers, bottled and draft wines and a full selection of liquor.

The Dooryard Pub will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 2-9 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
