The Maine Diner in Wells, alongside its adjacent gift shop, is scheduled for a foreclosure auction in June, a few months after it was initially put up for sale.
The iconic, decades-old diner and the Remember the Maine Gift Shop are set to be sold to the highest bidder June 4, but the current owner remains confident that business will continue as usual.
Jim MacNeill, who bought the diner in 2018 after more than a decade as its general manager, said the diner is doing everything it can to remain open.
“We are open for business, and we will continue to be open for business,” MacNeill said in a phone call Thursday.
MacNeill is planning to retire after decades in the restaurant business. In an April Facebook post on the diner’s page, he and his wife, Karen, wrote that they are weighing offers from potential buyers and seeking “the right fit for Maine Diner staff, customers and culture.”
In January, the diner was listed for sale at $3.3 million by Daigle Commercial Group.
Keenan Auction Company is set to auction the property on Route 1. The company’s website lists the 3.58-acre plot of land, along with the approximately 80-seat restaurant, the two-floor gift shop and about 75 parking spots.
An auctioneer from the company was unavailable for comment Thursday.
The diner is open Thursday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is also searching for potential new hires ahead of the upcoming summer tourist season.
Socrates “Louie” Toton first opened the diner in the 1960s; since then, the restaurant has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and NBC’s “Today” show, among others.
