The Casco Bay Bridge will be closed to large seafaring vessels Thursday between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for maintenance.
The closure marks another round of MaineDOT’s planned rehabilitation work on the bridge’s span lock power feeds. Similar work prompted temporary closures of the bridge, which connects Portland and South Portland, in April.
Maintenance scheduled for last week was postponed due to inclement weather, a Maine DOT spokesperson said Wednesday.
The department and the Portland harbor master’s office say smaller vessels that can safely navigate under the bridge may do so during Thursday’s closure.
The harbor master’s office directed mariners to contact the bridge operator at 207-592-2846 or VHF CH 13 for more information.
At 4,748 feet long, the Casco Bay Bridge is the longest in Maine and is the second-largest overall, with a deck area of 407,378 square feet. The Piscataqua River Bridge, connecting Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Kittery is 4,000 feet long and has a deck area of 418,000 square feet, according to Maine DOT.
