Promising to satisfy appetites for food and fun, Buxton Community Day is on for Saturday, July 21.

The annual event, which includes the Dorcas Society fair, will be held at Tory Hill, the intersection of routes 202 and 112. A pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Lions Club from 8-9:30 a.m. at Weymouth Park, is the first order of the day. Festivities conclude with fireworks, sponsored again by the Narragansett Number 1 Foundation, at 9:15 p.m.

“We’ll be booming,” said Beverly Atkinson, one of the event organizers.

Activities will be held at four sites around Tory Hill.

Events at Weymouth Park include a youth tennis tournament 9 a.m. to noon; a children’s doll, bike and stroller parade, 10 a.m.; and Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts sponsor 1K and 5K road races 8-9 a.m.

Beginning at 10 a.m., a parade filled with floats and marchers follows a route along Route 112 to the intersection at Tory Hill. Town Clerk John Myers, who lines up the parade at 9:30 a.m., said this week units include the Shriners, trucks from several fire departments, Boy and Girl Scout troops and antique cars and tractors.

Also at Weymouth Park, the midway with children and family activities, entertainment and food booths opens at 11 a.m. Port City Jazz will be featured there at 6 p.m.

In conjunction with Buxton Community Day, the Dorcas Society of Hollis and Buxton, a charitable organization, holds its annual fair and lawn party on the green at the Tory Hill Church. Women of the society will serve sandwiches, salads and desserts 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. under a tent on the lawn.

Baked goods, crafts, books and flowers will be sold in booths. A quilt raffle is a feature fundraiser.

A women’s group of the Buxton Center Church will have a booth at the Dorcas Society fair. Joan Weeman said it would have baked goods, pickles and relishes for sale.

For historical buffs, Revolutionary War reenactors wearing period costumes will camp at Helen Bruce Park near the church. The barn at the nearby historic Royal Brewster mansion will be open and Atkinson said the society would have items for sale there, too.

The night before the fair, a community supper offers socializing and good dining. The Bar Mills Community Church is hosting a casserole supper at the church, corner of Hermit Thrush and Portland roads, with sittings at 5 and 6 p.m.on Friday, July 20. The supper costs $6, $3.
