Sailors compete in SailMaine’s 420 team race series, held on Mondays throughout the summer. Participation in the junior and high school sailing programs at SailMaine has been on the rise in recent years, as the program looks to make sailing a sport accessible to everyone. “What makes us different from a yacht club is that we are trying to foster an inclusive feel to our organization,” said Sarah Helming, SailMaine’s junior program director and a special education teacher at Thornton Academy in Saco. “We really want to try to give as many people as possible access to the water.”
