Three incumbent city councilors are seeking re-election in uncontested races – Ed Symbol, Dotty Aube and Suzanne Joyce.

In Ward 3, Symbol is the 41-year-old owner of Full Court Press. He is married with three children, 19, 8 and 6. Symbol hadn’t originally intended to run for re-election, but no one else stepped forward to fill his seat. In his coming term, Symbol hopes to review and update the city charter. The changes he would like to make include reducing school committee terms from four years to three years, increasing city council terms from two years to three years, and staggering the terms on the city council.

In Ward 4, Aube is a 44-year-old nurse manager at Spring Harbor Hospital. She is a member of the school consolidation committee, and is a longtime member of the Frenchtown Association. She wants to continue to work on taking care of Brown Street issues like speeding. She wants to continue to address downtown economic development. She also wants to make sure neighborhoods maintain their character and that growth doesn’t happen for the sake of growth.

In Ward 5, Joyce is 45 and married with two kids, 12 and 11. She works as an account executive for Norton Insurance. She said she has been excited by what’s been going on in Westbrook the last four years and wants to continue attracting businesses to the city. Like some of the other Democratic candidates, she is concerned about communication with the administration, and feels clashes with the mayor prevent the city from moving forward sometimes.
