A Wildwood Circle family is urging people to come to a bone marrow donor drive next month to help their 17-year-old nephew and others like him who will need a bone marrow transplant in the future.
Greg and Tami Blake are spreading the word about the drive, which will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, at Volk Packaging on Drapeau Street in Biddeford. The drive will go from noon to 3 p.m. and is being run by the National Bone Marrow Donor Program.
The drive is being held in honor of the couple’s nephew Blake Vaillancourt, who is currently a patient at the Boston Children’s Hospital. While the drive is in honor of their nephew, they said any potential donors identified at the drive could be contacted to help any patient in need of a transplant.
Donors must be between 18 and 61 years old and have no pre-existing health conditions such as heart problems, diabetes, cancer or other such problems. The cost to register is $25, but there is money available to help cover a portion of the cost for those who cannot pay. People from certain minority groups where there is a great need for donors will be tested free of charge.
