
Larry completed Officers Candidate School for the U.S. Coast Guard in 1959 and went on to serve for 27 years. The family traveled to stations in Virginia, Guam and back to Virginia again before Larry retired from the Coast Guard with the rank of Captain. After retirement, Larry married Janet Robbins Hills of Pepperell and they moved to Bailey Island where they lived for 31 years before moving to Coastal Landing in Brunswick early in 2017. Larry and Janet were involved in many community and religious organizations. Larry was a selectman of the Town of Harpswell. Larry was an avid motorcyclist and he traveled with Janet as well as his good friends, Ed Johnson of Bailey Island and Don Lipoff of York, to many parts of North America. Larry was a devout Christian and was a member of a number of area churches including the Orr’s Island Methodist Church, Maine Street Baptist Church and All Saints Catholic Parish. Larry was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Larry is survived by his wife, Janet Foley of Brunswick; his children: Patrick Foley of Brunswick, Karen Foley Balicki of Brunswick and her husband John, Thomas Foley of Greenwood, Virginia and his wife Lori, and Wendy Foley of West Bath; his stepson, Kim Hills of Newport News, Virginia and his wife, Cathy; his sister, Mary Beth Barkhouse of Burlington, Massachusetts and her husband Ernie; his first wife, Joanne Foley of Brunswick,; his seven grandchildren: Ryan Foley of Los Angeles, Sarah Foley Linsmeyer of Virginia; Laura, Matthew and Bryan Foley of Virginia, Caitlin Balicki of Baltimore and Casey Balicki attending college in Chicago; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Lily Linsmeyer.
Larry was predeceased by a son, Stephen, who died at birth and his stepson, Todd Hills.
Visiting Hours for Larry will be on Friday, February 2nd from 4-7 PM at the Stetson’s Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick. A sharing of remembrances of Larry’s life will occur at 5 PM during the visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 3rd at 10 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church- All, Saints Parish 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick. Burial will be in the spring at the Bailey Island Cemetery with full military honors.
