JACKMAN (AP) — Police say a 31-year-old Maine man was seriously injured after he struck a moose while driving along U.S. Route 201 in Johnson Mountain Township.

Cpl. Eugene Cole tells the Portland Press Herald that John Coyle was driving on the road around 9 p.m. Saturday when the collision occurred. The moose landed on the hood of Coyle’s Subaru Legacy, causing the roof and windshield to cave in.

Cole says the Jackman man suffered severe head trauma and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Lewiston. The moose was killed by the impact and was disposed of by the Maine Department of Transportation.
