Gregory Reid “Greg” Barnes

PORTLAND – Gregory Reid “Greg” Barnes, 65, died Friday, March 4, 2022, at his home in Portland. He was born in Chicago, Ill. on Sept. 9, 1956, to Joe R. and Betty Earnest Barnes of LaGrange, Ill.

He attended school at Highlands Jr. High, Lyons Township High School, both in La Grange and Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. He played the trumpet in various bands and acted in many plays while attending these schools. He was a member of Brainard Ave. Baptist Church in Countryside, Ill. where he sang in the choir.

He worked in the tech industry, including owning his own computer business which allowed him to work on many exciting projects including granting wishes through the Make-a-Wish foundation. After moving to Portland, he rediscovered his love of grilling, gardening, and loved playing darts and pool with his friends.

Greg wished to be cremated and his ashes will be spread at Lake Bud Isaiah, a place that holds special meaning to him and his family. Per his wishes, no services will be held.

He is survived by his father, Joe R. Barnes of Mantachie, Miss.; his four children Nikki Luo (Howard) of Chicago, Betsy Van Brocklin (Dusty) of Murrayville, Ill., Andrew Barnes of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ben Barnes (Quinn) of Andover, Mass.; five grandchildren, Ruth Van Brocklin, Abraham Van Brocklin, Bella Barnes, Liam Joe Luo, Oliver Luo; two brothers, Gary of LaGrange and Glen (Joy) of Cochran, Ga.; and several cousins, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Earnest Barnes of Mantachie, Miss.; and his grandparents, A.L. and Susie Mae Earnest, and Chester and Josie Barnes.
