Sødt, a Nordic candy store on Cumberland Avenue, recently announced plans to launch a second location this summer in Freeport.

The new store will be located at 58 Main St., in a basement-level space below Vineyard Vines. The 2,200-square-foot store is more than three times the size of their Portland flagship, which opened a year ago.

“We needed a bigger space for storage,” said co-owner Nikoline Østergaard. “We’re really lucky Maine loves candy, but we don’t have anywhere to store it right now.”

The new Sødt is on track to launch in June. Østergaard said they haven’t yet settled on operating hours.

The Freeport store will have the same format as the original shop, where customers build their own bags of candy, though they’ll be able to choose from a larger selection of about 100 imported sweets. Østergaard said the back of the store will be used for storage, packaging, launching wholesale accounts and filling monthly subscriptions for customers.

Østergaard said Freeport “made sense” as the site of a new store. “It’s a very welcoming and open community that’s trying to push more local businesses, and they want them to thrive.”
