The opening of Westbrook’s new 16-screen Cinemagic movie theater was celebrated last Thursday with all the trappings of a big Hollywood movie premiere. There was a black tie gala, complete with a red carpet, and free popcorn and candy for all.

For the event, theater owners Zyacorp Entertainment turned the lobby of the theater into a reception area with decorated tables and hors d’oeuvres. An open bar served drinks to those in attendance, and the concession stand was open as well.

“I thought it was one of the nicest openings I’ve been to since I’ve been a councilor,” said City Councilor John O’Hara. “It was a red-carpet gala affair in Westbrook.”

O’Hara said there was a camera and interviewer that greeted the guests at the door and announced them like they were walking the red carpet for the Academy Awards. He said the images were shown on a big screen inside.

O’Hara said it was a beautiful event and something he hasn’t seen since Calpine’s grand opening five years ago. “I had a great time,” he said.

City Administrator Jerre Bryant said the opening of the theater marks the return of a major cinema to Westbrook. He also said it continues the trend of service and entertainment businesses moving out from the Maine Mall along the Route 22 corridor.

Westbrook’s new Cinemagic movie theater opened for business last week with a gala grand opening.
