Beginning Oct. 9, Westbrook will begin the collection of properly tagged, selected, large, bulky items as part of the regular curbside rubbish collection program.

Items to be collected through this program must have a blue tag attached to the item for collection.Residents must purchase a tag to place on the item from the finance department at City Hall. Tag fees vary, from $10 for small wood furniture to $20 for a couch or a sofa.

Bulky items that are eligible for collection with this program are limited to couches, sofas, stuffed chairs, mattresses, box springs, rolled carpet and wood furniture.

There will be no special collection for properly tagged items. Acceptable items will be collected on the resident’s regular rubbish collection day through out the year. The regular curbside collection truck will collect properly tagged items as part of the regular curbside program.

However, residents are limited to placing only one of each acceptable item out for collection per year.

Items that are not acceptable for collection are sleeper sofas, metal, universal wastes, demolition materials, construction debris, tires or appliances. Residents can dispose of unacceptable items at the Riverside Recycling Center, on Riverside Street in Portland.

Property owners will be responsible for disposing of unacceptable items that are placed out for collection that do not comply with the rules and regulations of the program. The program is limited to those properties that are eligible for pickup under the current Westbrook curbside collection program.
