Police chief honored by peers

Buxton Police Chief Jody Thomas is the recent recipient of the “Outstanding Contribution to Law Enforcement Award” from the Maine Chiefs of Police Association.

The award recognized Thomas, sergeant-at-arms of the chiefs’ association, for her dedication and commitment to her profession. A letter signed by Chief Douglas Bracy, president of the association, and Chief Richard Pickett, awards committee chairman, cited three high-profile cases handled by Thomas’ department in 2007.

They were the case of missing teenager Coreen Wiese; the elderly traffic fatality victim, Ethel Lewis; and the state’s largest seizure of dogs in the so-called puppy mill case.

“The citizens of Maine and members of the law enforcement profession are extremely proud of your efforts and accomplishments,” the letter read.

Students promote conservation

The fifth-grade Gifted and Talented Educational Services students in Ilse Burns’ class are combining energy conservation with learning at Jewett-Hanson schools.

Their project is designed to help with their reporting and interviewing skills as well as promoting energy conservation. Once a month, the students scout the school buildings hoping to catch staff members who are doing their part to conserve.

Those caught are awarded a certificate for their efforts. In May, all those who received certificates will have their names included in a drawing for a special prize.

Karen Audett, educational technician, and teacher Ashley Lambert were “caught” turning off the computer and lights when a classroom was empty. They are also reusing and recycling paper.
