The Gorham girls’ basketball team finished their season with a 6-12 record to earn the No. 10 seed for the Western Maine tournament. To say this has been a difficult season for the Rams would be an understatement.

The Rams began the season with a lot of promise. They made it to the quarterfinals last year and were hoping to take it further this year. Things began well with a 5-1 start. But the season and the outlook changed in a hurry in the seventh game of the season against Thornton Academy.

Early in that game, the Rams lost the league’s top player, Rachele Burns, to a season-ending knee injury. Following the injury to Burns the Rams lost six straight games before defeating Bonny Eagle in the penultimate game of the year.

“We have struggled since early in the season,” said Gorham coach Laughn Berthiaume. “We are looking to play hard and compete. We have played enough games together in our new roles that our young team should be able to play hard and play together.”

The Rams were scheduled to open the tourney Wednesday against Biddeford. The two teams recently squared off, with the Tigers coming out on top. Berthiaume said he is going to make sure his team focuses on the task at hand and doesn’t look ahead.

“We are going to focus on what Biddeford did well against us and try to emphasize how to counter that,” he said. “We are looking at one game at a time. If we are able to pull off the upset, we will then refocus our energy into playing South Portland, but that is not on the agenda yet.”
