New Year’s fete planned

Gorham will ring in the New Year on Dec. 31 with a celebration of the arts. While final details will take several months to complete, the working committee is well on its way to coordinating this event.

“New Year Gorham will be a community-wide and alcohol-free celebration affordable for all,” said Virginia Wilder Cross, who, with a group of volunteers, is coordinating the event with the support of the town of Gorham’s public safety and fire departments, public works and recreations departments.

“It will feature musical, performing and visual arts in a variety of venues including churches, schools, and public buildings throughout Gorham. The New Year will ring in with an exciting celebration culminating with a fireworks display at midnight accompanied by music, church bells ringing and lots of Auld Lang Syne,” she said.

The committee will seek corporate funding to cover necessary seed money that will supplement the cost of the event and make it affordable for all. It is projected that the admission to all evens will be covered with the purchase of a button. The plan is to keep the button cost at a minimum with family rates available. Fundraising efforts will begin over the next few weeks and continue throughout the coming months.

Volunteers are needed to work with the committee on all phases of the event. The committee is also seeking performers who would like to be part of the entertainment. Interested people should contact Cross at 222-2248, or Cindy Hazelton at 222-1630.

Plant, book sale set

A plant and book sale will be held at the North Gorham Library on Saturday, June 24, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. For further information contact Virginia Rundell 892-2575.

Named to dean’s list

Daniel MacKenzie of Gorham was named to the dean’s list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for winter quarter 2008. MacKenzie is an animation major.

The Gorham Business and Civic Exchange will host a social and open house at Ameriprise Financial Services, Main Street in Gorham, on Thursday, June 12, starting at 5:30 p.m. Weather permitting, tables will be set up outside under a tent. All members of the Gorhamn nusiness community and their guests are invited to attend.

Trish Moulton, past president of the group and owner of The Dance Studio of Maine, will present the Business Person of the Year award to Jason Beever, of C. E. Carll Insurance.
