After successful seasons on the track, both the Bonny Eagle and Gorham boys and girls track teams are well-represented in the recently release SMAA 2008 outdoor track all-star teams.
For the Scots, Jamie Ruginski was named in the most categories, scoring two first team and three second team honors.
Ruginski was named as a first-team all-star in the triple jump, an event in which he won the individual Class A state title earlier this month and the 300 hurdles, an event where Ruginski clinched the New England championship as well as the SMAA championship earlier this month.
In addition to his two first-team nominations, Ruginski was named to the all-SMAA second team in the long jump, an event that Ruginski won at the Class A state championships and the 110 hurdles. Ruginski also received an honorable mention from the SMAA for the 400-meter dash.
The Scots’ other first team all-star was Matt Bolton. Bolton was honored for the 1,600-meter race walk, an event he finished second in at the Class A state championships.
Rounding out the nominations for the Scots’ boys team were: Nate Doehler, who was named to the second team for the javelin and also received honorable mentions for the long jump and the 300 hurdles; Noah Schoneberg, who was named to the second team for the 3,200-meter run; Jon Simard, who received an honorable mention for the javelin; Joey Collins, who got an honorable mention for 800-meter run and Dalton Groeger, who also received an honorable mention for the 1,600-meter race walk.
In addition to those honors, the Scots’ Murphy Doughty and Christopher Smith were named to the all-academic team.
On the girls side for the Scots, Melissa Carrier was named to the all-SMAA second team for the 100-meter dash, Kaitlyn Gardiner received an honorable mention for the 110 hurdles, Morgan Costa earned an honorable mention for the 200-meter dash and Ashley Cox also received an honorable mention for the 1,600-meter race walk.
In addition to those honors, Gardiner, Jenni Laiho, Kelly Martin and Victoria Negus were named to the SMAA all-academic team.
The Gorham girls, who finished fifth overall at the Class A state championship earlier this month, also had a number of athletes named to all-star teams.
The Rams’ Rachel Wilkinson, who won the state championship in the 1,600-meter run, was named to the all-SMAA first team in that event. Wilkinson was also named a second team all-star in the 800-meter dash.
Alyson Fearon, who just missed state titles in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, was named to the all-SMAA first team in both events.
Other Gorham girls honored were: Leigh Maniscalco, who was named as a first team all-star in the pole vault and the 300 hurdles; Liz Demski, who was named to the all-SMAA first team in the 1,600-meter race walk and Nicole Belhumer, who received an honorable mention in the javelin. Maniscalco, Lindsay Hansen and Corey Perkins were also named to the SMAA all-academic team.
On the boys side, the Rams’ Cam Stevens was named as a first team all-star in the 400-meter dash and a second team all-star in the 200-meter dash. Gorham’s Luke Sieferth was named as a second team all-star in the 1,600-meter race walk and Evan Lambert received an honorable mention from the SMAA for the pole vault.
One other local athlete was honored by the SMAA. Westbrook’s Amy McIntire was named to the all-academic team for the Blue Blazes.
