University of Southern Maine officials issued a warning to students last week after two female students reported they were were stalked and/or sexually assaulted.

According to Judie O’Malley, a university spokeswoman,

the first report came in at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, when a female student reported that a man was walking “uncomfortably” close to her while she was walking from Brooks Dining Center toward Wood Hall, prompting her to pull out her cell phone and call campus police. He quickly fled without touching her, O’Malley said.

At 2:50 p.m., another female student reported that a man, matching the same description in the previous report, walked up behind her on her way to Bailey Hall and grabbed her buttocks before running away.

Both students provided the same description of the suspect: a white male in his early 20s with a bald or shaved head, light-colored eyes, medium build, about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches, and wearing a white T-shirt and khaki shorts. Police believe the same person was involved in both incidents, O’Malley said.

After the second incident, the university immediately alerted all students on campus of the situations via e-mail, and blanketed the campus with a description of the events, O’Malley said.

“We take security here very seriously,” O’Malley said. “We’re very serious about notifying everyone on campus, faculty and students, when something like this happens.”

The incidents are still under investigation.
