The Cheverus Debating Team took home the Sportsmanship Award and a third-place win from the state championship held Jan. 31 at Maranacook High School in Wayne.
Although Cheverus did not regain its championship title, it posted some notable performances. It had two debaters in the three possible Lincoln-Douglas final rounds: Sophomore Kelly Thomas of Standish was first runner-up in Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Joe Moreshead, a senior from South Portland, was first runner-up in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Both debaters had bested the eventual champions earlier in the day’s double-elimination tournament.
Other noteworthy performances included Aubrey Haskell, a sophomore from Portland, who placed fifth in Junior Varsity Lincoln-Doublas Debate, and the team of seniors Ian Conners, of Brunswick, and Brian L’Heureaux, of Scarborough, who came in third in Policy Debate.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, the debate team competed in the Catholic Forensic League District Qualifier. The following will represent Maine at the National Tournament in Albany, N.Y., over Memorial Day weekend:
Public Forum Debate: sophomores Kevin Connelly, Biddeford, and Reid DesRuisseaux, Buxton; junior Kenneth Laughton, Portland, and sophomore Spencer Pierce, Gorham.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Kelly Thomas, Standish.
