He married Dale Ann Norris and she predeceased him. In 1992 he married Marion Gray who predeceased him in 2008. Julian joined the Merchant Marine in 1943 which later became the United States Coast Guard from which he retired in 1958. He then became employed by the Town of Gloucester as the director of Public Works. Following that he was employed by Gorton’s Seafood and retired from there as Vice President.
After his retirement he moved to Newmarket, New Hampshire and in 1995 relocated to Maine. He wintered in Naples Florida until 2006.
On March 11, 2009 he married Barbara Boyland. They enjoyed travels to Europe, cruises on the New England coast, and winter trips to Florida. Julian enjoyed many past times as a mariner, an artist, a clockmaker who repaired and restored antique clocks, and a renowned history buff.
Julian was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the National Association of Marine Surveyors, the American Boat and Yacht Council, United States Naval Institute, Maine Maritime Museum, and the Down East Yacht Club.
Surviving are his wife Barbara of Bath and brother Norman Hatch of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by stepchildren of a previous marriage, Eric J. Forsbergh of Reston, Virginia; James S. Gray of Whitefish, Montana; and Natalie C. Gray of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. He is also survived by stepchildren of his present marriage Deborah Ann Marsh and Lasca S. Boyland both of Bath, Maine.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm November 4, 2012 at the Winter Street Center on 880 Washington Street, Bath Maine.
