With only a dusting on Christmas Day, organizers of the annual New Year Gorham have been hoping for more snow for its festivities.

“We have added an afternoon event – a snow-sculpting contest – although with today’s weather it’s hard to imagine we will be able to pull that off,” New Year Gorham founder Virginia Wilder Cross worried on Friday.

But by Wednesday, the chances of snow for sculpturing brightened.

“Right now, the snowfall that’s predicted [for Thursday] will certainly help our first snow-sculpture contest,” Cross said.

The National Weather Service in Gray on Wednesday also predicted a 30 percent chance of rain/snow on Friday and 30 percent chance of snow for both Saturday night and Sunday. On New Years Eve, the temperature will likely dip to about 10 degrees.

Gorham plans are calling for snow sculpting to run Monday from noon-4 p.m. in Robie Park, near the high school. The annual Gorham celebration features a spaghetti supper, horse-drawn wagon rides, a program packed with entertainment, and fireworks capping the evening at 10.

Revelers will start celebrating on a full stomach with a spaghetti dinner, costing $8, served up from 5-6 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall, corner of School Street and College Avenue.

Citizen volunteers working with Gorham’s police, fire, public works and recreation departments, along with churches and businesses, team up to make the whole Gorham celebration possible.

“It’s going to knock your socks off,” Cross said about the entertainment.

Maine comedian Randy Judkins will be on stage from 8:30-9:45 p.m. in the auditorium at Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave.

The Don Roy Trio, with Gorham’s own Don and Cindy Roy, will perform 6:30-8 p.m. in the Odd Fellows Hall, corner of School Street and College Avenue. Well-known for its Franco-American music, the trio has played the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress.

Mad Science will be presented from 6-7:30 p.m., also in the Odd Fellows Hall.

The Centre of Movement, 19 State St., will host a variety show with dance, music and drama, from 6-7:30 p.m.; a drum circle from 7:30-8:30 p.m.; and live music from 8:30-10 p.m.

For choral and vocal music lovers, the Choral Art Society Carolers will perform from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Gorham House on New Portland Road.

At First Parish Congregational Church, performances include the Two-Morrows, 5:30-6 p.m.; Gorham Community Chorus, 6-6:45 p.m.; and the First Parish Church Choir, 7-7:45 p.m.

The Two-Morrows, a father-daughter duo of Darrell and Sarah Morrow, “are fabulous,” Cross said.

Cross said Sarah Morrow is a trained vocalist and has sung opera at the Met.

“She also plays the mandolin and banjo and is a really wonderful entertainer,” she said.

Darrell Morrow was the choral director at Gorham High School, and, Cross said, he’s “an amazing pianist,” and he’d also be on stage with Judkins to end the evening’s performances.

For families with young children, there will be Dana Perkins and his Puppet Friends, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and a wild animal zoo, from 5:30-7:15, at Shaw Gym in the Gorham Municipal Center. Face painting there is ongoing from 5:30-7:15 p.m.

The event includes Dan Grady Productions, which will present Marionette Theater from 7:15-8:15 p.m. in the high school auditorium, following a steel drummers performance from 6:45-7:15 p.m.

Horse-drawn rides, sponsored by Gorham Business Exchange, will shuttle revelers among entertainment venues in Gorham Village. A wheelchair-accessible van will be provided courtesy of Home Instead Senior Services.

Fireworks bring the evening to a close at 10 p.m. at the Gorham High School athletic complex. The fireworks are sponsored by Casco Federal Credit Union and Chalmers Insurance Group.

Cross said wind would be the only factor that could cancel fireworks.

The event attracts many from surrounding communities.

“I do expect a larger crowd, as word is getting around that it is a really wonderful way to greet the New Year,” Cross said.
