BRUNSWICK — Edmund J. Viel, of Brunswick, passed away on February 5th, 2013, with his family by his side. Edmund was born in Stockholm on June 14th, 1927, the son of Isidore and Delina (Therriault) Viel. He grew up in Stockholm attending Stockholm schools.

At a young age Edmund left school to work with his dad as a lumberjack to help out, being the oldest son it was his responsibility, something he did with pride. In 1944 he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country.

On November 24, 1946 he married Ruth Mazerolle and the couple resided in Keegan to raise their family. Edmund worked many jobs to support his family. He worked at several paper mills, he worked for Eddie Chase as a milkman, also did some construction for Presque Isle Air force Base and Limestone Base. In 1964 he moved to Topsham to work for Consolidated Construction Company, helping to build the library for Bowdoin College, until retirement in 1987.

Edmund was a family man and very proud of it, nothing meant more to him. Spending time with his grandchildren always brought a smile to his face. He was also an outdoor enthusiast, loved to go camping, fishing and gardening. Woodworking was another passion of his, as there wasn’t anything he did that his heart wasn’t into. He will be sadly missed by all that loved him.

Edmund was a member of the American Legion and a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.

He is predeceased by his parents; his wife Ruth of 51 years; a son Joseph and daughter Diane Viel; as well as 4 sisters, Edwina Peters, Alphena Erickson, Helena Raymond, Rose Johnson.

He leaves behind his daughters Patricia Viel Leclerc & husband David of Topsham as well as Donna Viel Walsh & husband Neil of Topsham; Grandchildren, David Leclerc of Bethel, Christopher Leclerc of Topsham, Corey Leclerc of Socorro N.M., Jamie Walsh of Portland, Megan Gurney of Topsham; great grandchildren, Gracia, Lauren, Colin & Ethan Leclerc, Dana Green, Alexa & Ty Gurney & Neila Walsh.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, February 11th, 2013 from 8:00-9:30am at Demers-Desmond Funeral Home, 34 Cushing Street, Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist church, Pleasant Street, Brunswick.
