BELFAST (AP) — Maine lawmakers and environmentalists are seeking a comprehensive study of a proposal to dredge part of Penobscot Bay.
State Sen. Chris Johnson, D-Somerville; Rep. Walter Kumiega of Deer Isle; and Rep. Mick Devin of Newcastle are joining members of the Sierra Club of Maine and others in Belfast today.
They want the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a full study on the environmental impacts of the proposal to dredge Searsport Harbor.
The Sierra Club of Maine says the plan to dump the spoils of the dredging project into Penobscot Bay will have serious environmental and economic impacts by threatening the lobster and endangered Atlantic Sturgeon in the area.
