This month the Dead River Company, headquartered in Scarborough, is making donations to the Good Shepherd Food Bank in support of Hunger Action Month.
From now through Sept. 18 for anyone who submits a back to school photo or likes Dead River on Facebook, the company will donate $5, up to $10,000, to the food bank, which serves many local food pantries throughout Maine.
As part of its ongoing commitment to fighting food insecurity and hunger, Dead River is hoping to raise awareness and provide on-going support to local food banks and pantries.
In Maine, 202,910 people, including 1 in every 4 children do not have enough food on a daily basis, the company said in a press release.
“Children can’t learn on an empty stomach,” said Deanna Sherman, President & CEO of Dead River. “If they can’t learn, they can’t thrive and we need our young people to grow up healthy and eager to learn. This is an easy way to raise awareness within the community and to raise much needed funds” to fight hunger.
According to the group Feeding America, each $1 donated to fight hunger equals 11 meals. “Together, we can provide 110,000 meals to our friends and neighbors across New England,” the press release said.
