A photo in the March 7 Portland Press Herald sports section was misleading, and the accompanying article (“Format impacts attendance,” Page D1) lacked information.

The story neglected to mention that Class AA tournament games were played in Augusta because the Cross Insurance Arena double booked the weekend of March 4 and 5 and told the Maine Principals’ Association they would have to schedule games elsewhere.

The Press Herald also did not mention that the photo was the Bangor-Cheverus Class AA North girls quarterfinal game, at 4 p.m. Feb. 16. The Deering fans in the photo were there for the 5:30 p.m. game. Was the photo taken between games? Because nobody seems to be watching an exciting game (46-44).

If Vinalhaven (population 1,200) and Eastport (population 1,300) Class D girls can travel to Bangor and pack the Cross Insurance Center, I think the Portland and South Portland boys should fill the Augusta Civic Center. There must be other reasons. It’s not just the format.
