“Nana,” as she was known to both friends and family, was adored by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. Devoted to her family, she spent countless nights tending to lovable, rambunctious grandchildren, all the while spoiling them with her delicious baked goods. Nana was particularly renowned for her delicious cinnamon rolls and whoopie pies, which could always be found in her cupboard when her grandchildren visited her home on Chamberlain Avenue.
Nana was also noted for her skill in sewing and knitting. Thanks to her prolific production over the past several decades, her granddaughters and great-granddaughters have closets full of hand knit wool sweaters to proudly wear. Nana’s knitting talents also live on with ice hockey moms in Basking Ridge, NJ, who annually bid for the rights to wear her “Ridge High School” sweaters. The tradition recently entered its 20th season.
Above all, Nana’s greatest source of joy in life was unquestionably her 71-yearstrong marriage to her husband Ernest. After meeting on the day he returned from World War II to Dennysville, ME they married exactly one year later and were inseparable companions thereafter. She was particularly proud of him when he served as Grand Marshall of the Brunswick Memorial Day Parade in 2010.
The quintessential matriarch since her days spent helping to raise her five younger siblings, Muriel’s love and commitment to her family remained steadfast through her passing. She is survived by her husband Ernest O. Jones, her son Roger Jones and his wife Donna of Newburyport, MA, and her daughter Peggy Bernstein and her husband Barry of Nashville, TN; her grandchildren Stephanie (Jones) Renaud and husband Pierre of Lewiston, ME, Allison (Jones) Taylor and her husband Russ of Shapleigh, ME, Heather Jones of Henniker, MA, Thomas Bernstein and his wife Betsy of Nashville, TN, and Sarah Bernstein of Hoboken, NJ; her greatgrandchildren Devin Taylor, and Mia Renaud, Sally and Maggie Bernstein; her sisters Arolyn Mains of Middletown, CT and Gloria Hamor of Wethersfield, CT; and, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Norma Wise of Topsham, and brothers Gordon Carter of Sanford and Granville Carter of Middletown, CT.
The family would like to express its appreciation to the staff of Sunnybrook for its loving care over the last 7 years, to Randy Wise for his help, and to Brenda and Doug Rice of Brunswick for their love and attention these many years.
A celebration of Nana’s life will be held at on Sunday, January 28, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, in Brunswick with a viewing from 2 to 4 PM and a memorial service at 4 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the veterans charity of your choice.
